Sham Kaushal Cancer: Vicky Kaushal’s father Sham Kaushal has returned after beating cancer, was preparing for suicide

Actor Vicky Kaushal’s father Sham Kaushal is one of the biggest figures in the world of stunt and action choreography in Indian films. He has worked in memorable films like Dangal, Bajirao Mastani, Padmavat, Krrish 3. Today, he completes four decades in his career and in an exclusive chat he shares his best and worst memories from a long and illustrious career. He opened up about his battle with cancer, which is a part of his life that very few people know about. At one point he even thought of taking his own life but he persevered and survived. He took many risks in life when his sons Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal were children.

42 years of Sham Kaushal’s career
Talking about his career, he (Sham Kaushal) said in the interview, ‘I became a member of the Stunt Artists Union on 8 August 1980. Today on August 8, 2022, I have completed 42 years in this beautiful industry. I became an action director in 1990. My first film was a Malayalam film called Indrajalam. My first Hindi film was Nana Patekar’s Prahaar. How I got my first film is a matter of luck.

On working for children, he said, “Both my sons Vicky and Sunny were young. If you want to become an action director you have to give up your stuntman membership and you can no longer do stunts. In such a situation, there was a risk that if I did not get work as an action director, then I would have to sit at home. I took that risk and in the afternoon I got my Action Director membership card. I visited Mahalakshmi temple and reached Mukesh Mills to shoot at night.

sudden onset trouble
The most difficult time in the evening’s life came when he came to know that he was battling a very serious illness. Regarding this, Sham said, ‘After coming back from Ladakh after completing the shooting of Lakshya in September 2003, I started having trouble in my stomach. The shooting of Shyam Benegal’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was going on and it was a holiday for Diwali. I was having a lot of pain in my stomach. The next day I went for a check-up. I got admitted to the hospital and they had to operate on my stomach. I went to Nanavati Hospital earlier with Nana Patekar with an appendix problem. So, the doctors knew me and my condition.’

When I found out about cancer…
He further said – Nana Patekar, who was shooting in Pune, was called by the doctors. Nana ji immediately left from there and came straight to the hospital. I was unconscious. I had an infection in my stomach. Doctors cut a piece of stomach and sent it for examination. It was cancer. I was not sure whether I would survive or not. I haven’t shared it with anyone. I was in the hospital for 50 days. After that I went back to work. Thankfully the cancer did not spread. It’s been 19 years since that incident. I had also decided that I would give my life by jumping from the third floor. But I could not get out of bed because I had undergone stomach operation.
