Why the layoffs are not ending
Twitter's new owner Elon Musk is further cutting back on teams combating misinformation on the social media platform. Last week, a moderator working on outsourcing for the social media platform learned that he had lost his job. Twitter and other large social media platforms rely heavily on contractors they have outsourced to control hate speech and enforce rules against harmful content.
Twitter has now started showing exits to people monitoring such content. Earlier on November 4, Twitter had informed its permanent employees about their ouster by sending an e-mail. Now Musk has started retrenchment of contract employees. Melissa Ingel, a contractor who has been working with Twitter for more than a year, was among a few people who were fired on Saturday. Melissa said that the situation in Twitter is likely to worsen due to the exit of a large number of employees.
