University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar has said that PhD degree is not mandatory to become an assistant professor in a college or university. For this only passing UGC NET is sufficient. He said this during the inauguration ceremony of newly constructed UGC-HRDC building at Osmania University (OU) campus. The UGC chairman also informed that one nation-one data portal is being developed, which will have all the UGC guidelines and other details.
Professor M Jagadesh Kumar also said that permanent faculty members of the university can guide PhD scholars during their probation period.
UGC issued these guidelines for PhD in November 2022
According to the PhD guidelines issued by the UGC about four months ago, the duration of the PhD degree course will be at least three years. This will also include course work. Maximum time of six years will be given from the date of admission in Ph.D. Additional time of maximum two years can be given through reregistration. Women can be given an additional relaxation of two years.
PhD cannot be done through online or distance mode.
Now serving employees or teachers anywhere will be able to do part time PhD. Earlier government serving employees or teachers had to take study leave from their department to do research.
Before submitting the thesis, the researcher had to publish at least two research papers in the referred research journals. Now it has been exempted in the new rules of PhD. The compulsion to publish two research papers during the process of research has been done away with. The requirement of research paper has been abolished.
According to the new rules of UGC, if a woman doing PhD due to marriage or other reasons goes to another place and wants to continue PhD in any institute there, then she will be allowed. They will not have to run away again and again to their city to complete their PhD.
