The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given permission to serve as doctors in the country for minorities who have been persecuted in Pakistan and who came to India on or before December 31, 2014. NMC has invited applications from people who have acquired Indian citizenship for permanent registration to work in the field of Modern Medicine or Allopathy. According to a notice issued by the NMC’s Board of Graduate Medical Education (UMEB) on Friday, the shortlisted applicants will be allowed to appear in the examination to be conducted by the commission or an agency authorized by it.
Last date to apply is 5th September
The NMC had in June set up a group of experts to formulate proposed examination guidelines for persecuted minority medical graduates in Pakistan who had migrated to India from Pakistan and had a permanent career in the medical field here. For registration, citizenship of India was taken. According to UMEB, the applicant should have a valid qualification in the medical field and should have served as a doctor in Pakistan before coming to India. The last date for submission of applications is September 5.
Special group was formed in June itself
NMC has authorized expert group to collect work experience (if any), demographic and educational information of the applicants to verify the documents received. The expert group will also decide the methodology and format of the particular examination to be conducted by the NMC. Once the guidelines are ready, candidates will be asked to register on a portal to appear for the proposed examination, an official source said.
Only after passing FMGE is it allowed to practice in India
After taking a medical degree from foreign universities, Indians can also practice in India only after passing the FMGE. However, post graduate degrees from five English-speaking countries—USA, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand—are valid in India and medical degree holders from these countries are not required to appear for the exam.
