The number of MBBS seats has increased by 87 percent and thus the number of medical seats in the country has increased to 96,077. Postgraduate medical seats have increased by 105 percent. The number of postgraduate medical seats in the country has reached 63,842. In addition, 58 colleges have been approved in 16 states, which will add 3,877 MBBS seats. The Union Health Ministry aims to increase 10,000 MBBS seats in government colleges alone.

PG seats will increase

To increase postgraduate seats, 72 medical colleges have been approved in 21 states or union territories in the first phase, which will lead to an increase of 4,058 seats. With the approval of 47 colleges in the second phase, there will be an increase of 2975 postgraduate seats.

According to reports, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the health ministry has set up 22 new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences and initiated a project to upgrade 75 government medical colleges. MBBS classes have been started in 19 out of 22 new AIIMS, which include 2,037 undergraduate seats.
