DU PhD: DU increased PhD fees by 1100 percent, teachers and students protested

The English department of DU has significantly increased the fees for PhD. Teachers claim that the fees have been increased by 1,100 percent compared to last year. The fee has been increased from Rs 1,932 to Rs 23,968 annually. Abhadev Habib, a teacher of Miranda House in DU and an official of Democratic Teachers Front, wrote in this regard on social media, after which anger was seen among the teachers and students. Teachers say that the annual fee for PhD in other departments is a maximum of one thousand rupees, then why has the fee for doing PhD in English been increased so much. Many student organizations of DU have also opposed the fee increase.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) condemned the move, saying students from poor families would not be able to pay such high fees. This will affect education. This is a major attack on publicly funded education institutions. This move will limit opportunities and increase the financial burden on students. At the same time, National General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Yagyavalyk Shukla said that ABVP is against privatization of education. We do not support expensive education not only in DU but in any central university.

Increase after several years An official of the English Department of DU says that the fee has been increased only after the permission of the university. There was no increase in fees for years. Apart from this, DU has also started a scheme that if the annual income of a student’s family is less than Rs 8 lakh, then half the fees will be charged from him.

Fee collection on many items

A DU teacher said that it is not just an issue of increasing the fees for PhD in English subject. Fees have increased on many items in the last two years. Many colleges have increased their fees by about 10 percent. Not only this, lab testing fees have increased manifold. Apart from this, fees are being collected from students in the name of development fee. Children from the most deprived communities studying in the School of Open Learning, their fees have also been increased in this session. The fees for B.Tech and five-year law courses in DU are also quite high. The five-year law fee is Rs 1 lakh 90 thousand annually.
