Delhi University is likely to hold student union elections in September this year after a gap of three years. University officials gave this information. We hope that the elections will be held by the end of this year.” The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) is the main representative body of the students of most of the colleges and faculties. In addition, each college has its own student’s union, whose elections are held every year. DUSU elections are conducted through direct voting by the students of the university and member colleges. The elections are usually held in the months of August and September. Around 2500 students contest for 500 posts in the student union elections, In which around one lakh students vote. Appreciating the authorities for conducting the elections, DUSU President Akshit Dahiya said, “This is a miniature form of democracy. However, I would say that this is the biggest student body election in the world. It is a constructive exercise.” He added, “The last elections were held in September 2019. Elections could not be held last year as admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate programs started late and then examinations took place,” Abhigyan, president of the Delhi unit of Left-backed student union AISA, praised the university’s move to hold elections. Abhigyan said that he hoped that the university would work on reducing undemocratic activities during the process. “I hope that this will be a free and fair election and that the university will work to make it more democratic by stopping excessive use of funds.
