Toll Plaza Fee Collection: National Highways have seen a huge increase in user toll collection since last few years. In 2019-20, Rs 28,482 crore was collected from the toll plaza, while in 2021-22 it has increased to Rs 34,742 crore. And during 2020-21, toll of Rs 28,681 crore has been collected.
Information has been given in the House on Wednesday, according to the information, till December 31, 2022, the total number of user toll plazas on national highways is 847 and the total number of FASTags issued by the National Highway Authority of India is 6.33 crore.  ;
FASTag reduces toll plaza congestion
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that the traffic congestion at fee plazas has reduced significantly due to the implementation of the FASTag system. Apart from this, new technology is being used to reduce any congestion on National Highways.
Traffic reducing with these techniques
The Union Minister said that Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), video based multilane free flow systems have been installed. These systems are reducing the congestion of vehicles and removing the problem like jam. Apart from this, NHAI is also focusing on reducing traffic with the help of technologies.
Tolls are collected under this rule
National Highways toll is being collected and taxed under the Rules 2008. Under this rule, it is mandatory for the users to pay toll. In case of Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects, after the completion of the concession period, user toll will be collected by the Central Government at reduced rates of 40 per cent. On the other hand, in case of public funded project, the user charge rates are to be reduced to 40 percent after recovery of the capital charge of the project.
