As Diwali is approaching, onion prices are skyrocketing. Onion prices are increasing rapidly in many cities of the country including Delhi. The price of onion has increased from Rs 65 to Rs 80 per kg in the retail market of Delhi. Mother Dairy, which has around 400 successful stores in Delhi-NCR. Here onion is being sold at Rs 67 per kg in retail.
Whereas e-commerce portal Big Basket is selling onion at Rs 67 per kg and OTP at Rs 70 per kg. Whereas local vendors are supplying onion at Rs 80 per kg. If we look at the average, the price of onion is being sold at Rs 65 to Rs 80 per kg in the retail market in Delhi.
​Record increase in two days
On Wednesday, onion was being sold openly at Rs 54-56 per kg at Mother Dairy’s Safal store and in just two days the price of onion has touched Rs 67 per kg. That means there has been an increase of Rs 11 to 12 per kg in just two days. According to government data, the all-India average retail price of onion on Saturday is Rs 45 per kg, but the maximum price is Rs 80 per kg. The average price in Delhi is Rs 75 per kg.
Why are onion prices increasing
The reason behind the record increase in the price of onion is said to be that the supply of onion in the market is decreasing. The demand for onion is increasing rapidly before festivals. In such a situation, the price of onion is increasing. According to PTI, the official said that due to the delay in this Kharif crop, onion production has been delayed and arrivals have reduced.
It is noteworthy that in view of the increase in retail prices, the Central Government has decided to increase the sale of buffer onion in the retail market on Friday at a concessional rate of Rs 25 per kg to provide relief to the consumers.
Onion being sold at Rs 25 per kg
Let us tell you that in mid-August, about 1.7 lakh tonnes of onion was buffered at many places in 22 states. Now it is being launched in the retail market. Buffer onion is being sold at a subsidized rate of Rs 25 per kg through outlets and vehicles of two cooperative bodies NCCF and NAFED. Buffer onion is being sold at the same rate in Delhi also.
