The model price has been Rs 60 per kg and the minimum price has been Rs 17 per kg. This was based on government data but in many areas of Delhi the prices in the retail market have reached Rs 80 per kg.
In order to crack down on the rising prices of onion and increase the availability of onion in the domestic market, the Central Government has fixed the Minimum Export Price (MEP) of $ 800 per tonne on onion export till December 31, which is Rs 67 per kg. Is. The central government has also announced to purchase additional two lakh tonnes of onion for buffer stock. Even before this, the government had purchased more than five lakh tonnes of onion.
Onion from the buffer stock has been sold continuously in major consumption centers across the country since the second week of August. It has been supplied to retail consumers at the rate of Rs 25 per kg from mobile vans operated by NCCF and NAFED. Due to uneven rainfall and delay in sowing of Kharif onion, the area under onion cultivation remained less and the crop arrived late. New arrivals of Kharif onions are received by now. Now there seems to be little chance of onion prices stopping before December.
