Global Hunger Index 2023: India’s situation has worsened in the Global Hunger Index 2023. India has come to 111th place in the Global Hunger Index of 125 countries. Not only this, the highest child wasting rate or child malnutrition is also being seen in India and it is 18.7 percent. India’s situation has worsened further from the year 2022 and last year India was ranked 107th in this index.
India’s score is very poor in the Global Hunger Index
In this Global Hunger Index released today, India’s score is 28.7 percent, which brings it in a category where the situation of hunger and starvation is very serious. The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool to comprehensively measure and track hunger at the global, regional and national levels.
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are also ahead of India
According to the Global Hunger Index, if we look at other neighboring countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are also in a better situation than this. In the Global Hunger Index 2023, Pakistan is ranked 102nd, Bangladesh is ranked 81st, Nepal is ranked 69th and Sri Lanka is ranked 60th.
Last year the Central Government had rejected the Global Hunger Index
The Ministry of Women and Child Development of the Central Government had completely rejected this Global Hunger Index report last year and the year before that i.e. for 2 consecutive years. The ministry had said that metrics focused only on children should not be used to calculate global hunger. The ministry had called it a wrong way to measure hunger. Regarding GHI 2022, the ministry also said that out of the 4 methods used to calculate hunger, 3 are based only on the health of children.
