CBDT Chairman: Nitin Gupta’s tenure extended, will remain CBDT Chairman till June next year

The Union Cabinet has approved the reappointment of Nitin Gupta to the post of CBDT Chairman. This information was given in an official release issued on Saturday. Now Nitin Gupta will remain on the post of CBDT Chairman till June 30, 2024.

Appointment Committee approved

Official statement by the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. Told that the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet has approved the reappointment of Nitin Gupta to the post of CBDT Chairman. He has been appointed on contract basis. His appointment will be valid from October 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 or until further orders.

The recruitment rules have been relaxed to re-appoint Nitin Gupta to the post of CBDT Chairman. According to the release, Nitin Gupta has been re-appointed as a central employee on the basis of general rules and applicable conditions. Approval of this appointment means that Nitin Gupta will remain the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes i.e. CBDT till June next year.

The tenure was ending today

The Central Board of Direct Taxes is the top decision making body in the Income Tax Department. CBDT is headed by the Chairman. This board can have 6 members, who are of Special Secretary rank. The tenure of current CBDT Chairman Nitin Gupta was to end today itself. However, now he has got a service extension of 9 months.

He became the chairman last year

Nitin Gupta is a 1986 batch Indian Revenue Service officer. He was made the chairman of CBDT in June last year. During his tenure, the Income Tax Department has made the record of highest number of ITRs. This time more than 7 crore ITRs have been filed. Along with this, the credit for reducing the time taken in processing returns also goes to Nitin Gupta.
