In preparation to compete with Tata and Mahindra, Maruti will launch a car in the mid-size SUV segment

The country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) will enter the mid-sized SUV market to increase its overall market share in the country. A senior company official gave this information on Wednesday.

Maruti currently has less than 45 per cent overall market share and the company intends to increase it to 50 per cent. Maruti Suzuki Senior Executive Director Shashank Srivastava told reporters here that the company's market share in the non-SUV segment is more than 65 per cent, while the share in the SUV segment is not much. The basic objective of the company is to take its total market share to 50 per cent, he added.

Srivastava said SUVs are the largest and fastest growing category and Maruti should have a good market share in this. Maruti accounts for 20 per cent of the 6.6 lakh cars sold annually in the compact SUV segment. But Maruti does not have any car in the mid SUV segment. The annual sales in this segment is of 5.5 lakh units.

No car in mid segment SUV

Srivastava said that while Maruti is the leader in the compact SUV segment, the company is not present in the mid-size SUV segment. There is a need to enter the mid-SUV category and for this the company will introduce a car in the last week of September this year.

Talking about the safety of vehicles following the death of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry in a road accident, he said the company will focus on the need for rear seat safety belts.

The senior official said that seat belts are also mandatory for rear seat passengers by the regulator but very few passengers follow it. Srivastava said that Maruti Suzuki will spread awareness about the safety features and also address the issues through its driving schools. (with language input)
