To check air pollution in Tirumala Seshachalam Hills, AP Sarkar has made electric buses available. Officials have made some changes while conducting a trial run on the Tirumala Ghat Road for the past week. Electric buses have been made available to devotees in the background of Brahmotsavam. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy flagged off these electric buses at Alipiri depot on Tuesday night and formally flagged them off on Wednesday night. 100 electric buses have been ordered for Tirupati region, 50 of them have been decided to run on Tirumala Ghat road by December. The remaining 50 buses have been allocated to other areas. Points have been arranged near Alipiri depot for charging. The electric bus is equipped with the most advanced disc braking system that is powered by ABS and power assisted steering system. A short circuit and lightning protection system has been installed in the bus. The ticket price for Ranupunu for Tirumala-Tirupati journey in a pure electric bus with a capacity of 35 seats is 210 rupees.

These electric buses are manufactured by Olectra Greentech Limited (Olectra), a leader in electric mobility. 10 state-of-the-art electric buses have been delivered to Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) first out of 100 buses. These 100 e-buses will be supplied and operated on Gross Cost Contract (GCC)/OPEX model basis for 12 years. Olectra will deliver the remaining 90 electric buses very soon. These buses are operated from a dedicated electric bus depot at Alipiri (Tirupati). 50 buses will run on Tirumala-Tirupati Ghat, while the remaining 50 buses will run as intercity buses to Nellore, Kadapa and Madanapalle. Olectra will also undertake the maintenance of GreenTech buses during the contract period.

On this occasion, Olectra Greentech Chairman and Managing Director KV Pradeep said, "We feel blessed to serve the devotees who go to visit Lord Venkateswara Swamy on the occasion of Brahmotsavam. He said that their state-of-the-art electric buses provide the most comfortable journey on the Tirumala-Tirupati Ghat road. He said that these buses will protect the environment of Tirumala hills along with remaining forests. Olectra has made it clear that it is committed to efforts to reduce pollution levels through an efficient electric public transport system. We hope that our 100 electric buses will be successful in Andhra Pradesh as well as in other states. He said that their electric buses are running successfully in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Surat, Dehradun, Silvassa, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala.

Electric buses with modern facilities

These 9m air-conditioned buses have a seating capacity of 35+ drivers. Electronically controlled air suspension provides a comfortable ride. The buses have CCTV cameras, USB sockets for every seat and emergency buttons for the safety of passengers. The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery installed in the bus can travel up to 180 km on a single charge depending on the traffic and passenger load conditions. Made with the latest technology, this electric bus has a regenerative braking system. High power AC & DC charging system can fully recharge the battery in 3-4 hours.

Olectra electric buses have already covered more than seven crore kilometers on Indian roads. Reduced CO2 emissions by around 46,000 tonnes. Two crore trees are needed to reduce these emissions. Olectra has delivered more than 850 electric buses to various states. Olectra Buses entered the Limca Book of Records by traveling through the high Himalayan hills, from Manali to Rohtang Pass.
