Awad: The airport will get relief from the traffic problem, FASTag car parking facility will be started
Ahmedabad: Passing through the city’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport will ease the hassle of parking and waiting in queues. Like the Mumbai airport, the city’s airports are also going to get FASTag-enabled car parking facilities soon. Sources have confirmed that the Parking Fasttag facility will be introduced this month itself. Explaining how the new system will work, sources said that the new parking system will work similar to FASTag enabled toll gates.

When a car enters an airport parking facility, it must pass through an access-barrier and the FASTag affixed to the car will be scanned.
Later, when the passenger exits the car, the fee applicable as per the parking rules will be debited directly from the car’s FASTag account based on the time elapsed between their entry and exit.

A similar system was implemented at the Mumbai airport in December itself. The FASTag-enabled parking system is part of SVPI Airport’s larger parking automation project.

Attempt to reduce long queues of vehicles
A FASTag-enabled parking system will enable cashless transactions and reduce turnaround time for entering and exiting parking spaces and waiting time in parking lots. It will also help in reducing long queues of vehicles at parking checkpoints at airports. The idea of creating this facility is going on so that less man power and transportation can be provided and traffic lines can be reduced quickly. Sources said that recently the airport operator SVPI charged private/commercial/SUV cars a minimum of Rs. 90 charges.

Hourly traffic of 37 thousand passengers
For a tempo or a minibus the same is Rs. 300 and for coach or bus Rs. 500 is Charges increase as the parking period extends. SVPI airport handles at least 37,000 passengers a day. Sources said an estimated 15,000 cars, including private and commercial vehicles, pass through the city’s airport every day.

Prepayment option is also available
The authorities concerned are also considering implementing pre-payment option for parking. If customers do not avail the FASTag option, before exiting, they can also scan the QR code and pre-pay for their parking period, a source said. In this way, passengers can directly exit the airport. A system is being worked on and will be in place soon.
