Yogi government in preparation to start agriculture loan waiver scheme again, farmers who were left out last time will get benefit

Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath government farm loan waiver (Farm Loan Waiver) is in preparation for restarting the scheme. This scheme was suddenly stopped during the first term of CM Yogi. Because of this some farmers (Farmers) did not get the benefit of it. Now the government is considering to start it again to give the benefit of the scheme to those farmers. Officials related to the matter say that there were about 5000 farmers who were eligible to take advantage of the scheme. However, due to some reasons, his loan could not be waived. Then in September 2019, the scheme was discontinued. The government is going to start the scheme again for such farmers.

Some of the farmers who could not get the benefit due to the withdrawal of the farm loan waiver scheme, had approached the High Court. After this, the government is considering giving them benefits. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the decision on releasing the budget for the scheme was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Durgashankar Mishra two weeks ago. It is expected that provision of funds can be made by September-October for the loan waiver of the farmers left out from taking advantage of the scheme.

Loans worth Rs 25 thousand crore were waived

A senior official said that we have already informed the High Court that the government will waive the loans of all those eligible farmers whose petitions are pending in the court and we are going to do it soon. He said that the government would waive the crop loans of all the remaining farmers after making the allocation in the supplementary budget in the coming months. The Yogi Adityanath government had announced loan waiver for farmers as soon as it came to power in March 2017. It said that crop loans up to Rs 1 lakh taken by small and marginal farmers on or before March 31, 2016 would be waived off.

Banks had initially given a list of about 66 lakh farmers eligible for loan waiver, but later after checking the farmers as per the guidelines of the scheme, this number increased to about 45 lakh. Meanwhile, the government suddenly announced the closure of the scheme in September 2019. However, before the closure, the government waived off the total crop loan of 25 thousand crores of most farmers under this scheme.

An official of the Agriculture Department said that the government had closed the scheme without any advance notice. As a result, thousands of complaints or claims remained unresolved. Now the government may have to allocate more than 200 crores to settle the remaining loan waiver claims.
