Rabi season onion planting begins, know everything about its cultivation

At present, the planting of Rabi season onions has started in the state. Farmers cultivate the maximum onion in the state. And here Asia’s largest onion market is in Lasalgaon, Nashik. Usually once a year in many states farming of onion Is performed. But this is not the case in Maharashtra. Its three crops are taken during a year in the state. Here it is produced in Kharif, post-Kharif and Rabi season. Onion is a cash crop in Maharashtra. Most of the farmers here depend on its cultivation. And only in the Rabi season, the farmer gets the maximum onion production.

The second season of onion is sown in the month of October-November. Which is currently being planted in the state. It gets ready between January and March. The third crop of onion is rabi crop. It is sown in December-January. While the harvesting of the crop takes place from March to May. 60 percent of the state’s total onion production happens in the Rabi season only.

More farming is done in these districts

In Maharashtra, Nashik, Pune, Solapur, Jalgaon, Dhule, Ahmednagar, Satara, hectares, these districts have more cultivation. It is cultivated by farmers in some districts of Marathwada. Nashik district is famous for growing onions not only in Maharashtra but all over India. Out of the total production in India, Maharashtra produces 37% onion. And 10% production in the state It is done in Nashik district alone.

what should be the soil

According to agricultural scientists, onion can be cultivated in different types of soil. But it gives good yield in soil like sandy, loam, clay, loam and brown soil. Water in the field to get more yield in onion cultivation. There should be good evacuation facility.

what should the land be like

To prepare the land before cultivating onions, first three to four plowing should be done. And add rotted manure to increase the amount of organic matter in the soil. After this divide the field into small plots. The land is transplanted on a 1.2 m wide strip at a height of 15 cm from the surface.

how much fertilizer is used

Onion crop needs a lot of nutrients. Manure and fertilizer should be used in onion crop on the basis of soil test. Well decomposed cow dung at the rate of 20-25 tonnes per hectare should be applied in the field one to two months before transplanting.

Best Onion Varieties

Bhima Shweta: This variety of white onion is considered to be already approved for Rabi season, this variety gives an average yield of 18-20 tonnes in Kharif and 26-30 tonnes in Rabi.

Bhima Super: This red onion variety has been identified for cultivation in Kharif season. It can also be grown as a late crop in Kharif. This variety matures in 95-100 days. Its yield is about 20-22 tonnes per hectare.


The right time to remove onions from the fields is when the moisture in the plant ends and its knot starts coming up almost on its own.
