Punjab seeks to reduce electricity expenditure on irrigation, seeks funds for setting up motorized agricultural pump sets

Punjab is the major food grain producing state of the country. But, the state government has to work hard to make the sowing of crops practical. For example, Kharif season is very challenging for Punjab. During this Punjab Government Along with better seeds, additional electricity has to be arranged. It is definitely surprising to talk about the arrangement of additional power with seeds. But, the truth is right here. In fact, in the paddy transplanting season, when the heat is at its peak. During that time additional electricity is needed to run the irrigation pump set. For this the Punjab government has to spend heavily.

Now the Punjab government has started an initiative to reduce electricity expenditure on irrigation. With this objective, the Punjab government has sought funds from the central government for setting up agricultural pump sets in the state.

Demand for inclusion in PM-KUSUM scheme

The Punjab government, while demanding funds on solar powered pump sets, has demanded from the central government to include the state in the PM-KUSUM scheme. In this regard, a letter has been written to the Center on behalf of Aman Arora, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Resources, Government of Punjab.

Fund sought for 15 horsepower pump set

In fact, the Punjab government has sought central financial assistance under the PM-KUSUM scheme to facilitate 15 horsepower (HP) capacity solar powered agricultural pump sets in the state. State New and Renewable Energy Sources Minister Aman Arora said that Punjab has been kept out of the purview of the scheme. He said that though the Center has made a provision to provide CFA for agriculture pumps up to 15HP capacity to farmers of North Eastern and hilly states on August 1, 2022, this facility is available only for agri-pumps up to 7.5HP in Punjab. .

The Punjab minister said that the capacity of most of the pumps in the state ranges from 10HP to 15HP. The cost of solarizing these pumps would be very high and would be out of reach of the farmers. Hence, there is a need to provide CFA for high capacity pumps.

More than 15 lakh pump sets in Punjab

Punjab is the major food producing state of the country. It is known as the food bowl of India. Overall, Punjab is a predominantly agricultural state, and the state uses about 14 lakh electric motor pumps and 1.50 lakh diesel pump sets for irrigation.
