Nafed will provide market access to coarse cereals, vending machines will be installed in Delhi-NCR

The fate of coarse cereals is going to change. Coarse cereals with better nutritional properties were marginalized in the country for a long time. But, after the efforts of the Modi government, coarse grains are going to get a new recognition at the international level. the year under International Year of Millet by the United Nations on 2023 (International Year Dedicated to Coarse Cereals) has been decided to be celebrated. In this episode, the central government has started working to promote coarse grains in the country and ensure their access to markets. In which the important role of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (Nafed) has been decided. For which an agreement has been signed between Nafed and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Coarse grain based vending machines will be set up

In keeping with the initiative of International Year of Millets, Nafed and Ministry of Agriculture will work together for promotion and marketing of coarse cereals based products. In this episode, coarse grain based vending machines will also be set up in Delhi-NCR. At the same time, both the institutes will establish maximum value creation and support, organized publicity, market and effective market linkage for coarse grain based products across the country.

While under the agreement, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Nafed provide consultancy support to manufacturers/processors of value-added coarse cereal based products in some key sectors, including Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) empaneled start-ups, among others. On-boarding of key cereals, formation of FPOs exclusively for developing a range of coarse cereals based products, Nafed will provide support and assistance in market storage, marketing and focus on coarse cereals based commodities.

2023 is going to be important for coarse grains and farmers

The year 2023 is going to be important for coarse cereals. In fact, the United Nations has decided to celebrate the year 2023 as the International Year of Millets. The role of Modi government’s efforts behind this is important. In fact, the Modi government celebrated the year 2019 as the year of Millets in the country. After which the International Year of Millets was proposed to the United Nations underlining the nutritional value of coarse grains. After which the United Nations has announced to celebrate 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

Which so far has been approved by many countries. With this, coarse grains will be identified in many countries of the world. So there will be opportunities for profit for the farmers producing coarse grains. It needs to be noted here that India is the major producer of coarse cereals in the world.
