India and Uruguay will work together in the agriculture sector, both countries are eager to increase import-export among themselves

India and Uruguay agricultural sector I will work together. Both the countries have shown keenness to promote import-export among themselves. In fact, the Indian delegation led by Ashwini Kumar, Joint Secretary, Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Uruguay, held a meeting under the leadership of Marcos Martinez in the past. During this discussion has been held to explore the possibility of cooperation between India and Uruguay in the field of agriculture.

Uruguay has a population of 3.5 million, production for over 30 million people

During the meeting, Uruguay’s head of delegation, Marcos Martínez, said that his country produces many coarse cereals. In which Sorghum, Finger Millet, Paspalum and Panicum are prominent. At the same time, he told that Uruguay is considered a leader in food production. There are 3.5 million people living in Uruguay. But, food grains are produced for more than 30 million people in the country.

He said that Uruguay exports soybeans and its components like oil, long rice etc. In addition, Uruguay exports meat, milk, oranges, lemons, wool and locally made wine. At the same time, the production of wool and leather is very high and there is a lot of export potential. During this, Marcos said that they want to explore the possibility of cooperation between the two countries for germ plasm exchange, processing of grain for human food, breeding and any other research related to grain production.

India has revealed its export potential

India’s Agriculture Secretary Ashwini Kumar thanked MARCOS for providing information on Uruguay’s export potential. During this, Ashwini Kumar said that India also has many such agricultural products, which can be exported to Uruguay. He told that India produces many vegetables and fruits and exports mangoes, grapes, pineapples, pomegranates to many countries including America, Canada etc. He said that India also exports vegetables and basmati rice to Europe and North America, which is about 30,000 crores.

He told that 10 types of coarse cereals are grown in the country. He said that a technical bilateral group of Agriculture Department, Animal Husbandry Department and ICAR can be prepared from India’s side. He said that Uruguay can send a letter expressing its interest in cooperation and move in this direction in a planned manner. He said that both the countries can also prepare a roadmap for mutual exchange in germ plasm. Both countries can take advantage of the expertise.

He said that in the field of agriculture, there is a Joint Working Group (JWG) between India and USA, Canada, Australia, Europe Union and similarly JWG can be formed between India and Uruguay, which is twice a year- Once in India and once in Uruguay.

Offering to take advantage of the specialty of Agricultural University of India

India’s Joint Secretary Ashwini Kumar said in a meeting with the Uruguay delegation that there could be technical cooperation between the universities of the two countries. There are 74 agricultural universities in India and our country is very strong in this field. The program of student movement between the two countries is also a major area where both the countries can cooperate. Uruguay students can also get admission here for research and postgraduate programmes. The Uruguay delegation said it was a great idea as it would further strengthen the ties.
