With the efforts of the Government of India, the United Nations has declared the year 2023 as the International Year of Millet. Prof Manmohan Singh Chouhan, Vice Chancellor of GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology said that the coarse cereals grown in the Himalayan/mountainous regions are rich in nutrients. In such a situation, it is very necessary by the scientists to develop these crops as farmer-friendly regional species. He said that for this research needs to be done by teaming up scientists of different departments of the university, so that farmers of hilly areas can be made more and more aware. Stressing on the need to make these products value added products, Dr. Chouhan also stressed on publishing publications for maximum publicity.

He said that most of the population of Himalayan states/regions directly or indirectly depend on the traditional practice of integrated hill agriculture, animal husbandry and agro-forestry for their livelihood.

Use of Himalayan cereals is necessary on daily basis

Dr. AK Shukla, Registrar, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology said that valuable mountain crops like Himalayan cereals like millet, ragi (Maduva) etc. are hidden sources of essential compounds. Showing their importance, the registrar called for identifying these crops and using them on a daily basis. In the conference, the Chief Scientist, former Registrar of the University, Vivekananda Hill Agricultural Research Institute, Almora, Dr. DC Joshi, keeping in mind the regional conditions of traditional mountain cereals, such as bajra, Madua, the protection of the crop sown from wild animals and other important traditional practices. – Methods explained.

The central government is also active in re-establishing the importance of coarse grains among the common man and making them popular internationally. In this episode, on the one hand, the central government is talking about replacing the main crops with coarse cereals under the Crop Diversification Scheme. On the other hand, due to the efforts of the central government, the United Nations is going to celebrate the year 2023 as the International Year of Millet.
