In this episode, the Uttarakhand government has announced that it is planning to provide free ration to 23 lakh families, besides sugar and salt at low prices.

65 lakh crore will be spent

According to media reports, Uttarakhand’s Food Minister Rekha Arya told that the department has also prepared a budget proposal for this scheme. It is yet to be presented in the cabinet. To implement the scheme, the state will have to spend an additional Rs 65 lakh crore.

Free essential items for the poor

Giving information to the media, the Food Minister has told that in the year 2023, the Central Government has decided to give free ration to all the poor families across the country. Free ration will be given to ration card holders this whole year. The state government wants that apart from wheat and rice, goods like sugar and salt should also be given free of cost to the poor. Along with this, other essential items should also be given at low prices.

Subsidy will be given on sugar

It has been suggested to give subsidy of Rs 10 per kg on sugar. This can be increased up to Rs.15. Along with this, while giving information, the state government said that the card holders who have not taken ration on their cards for the last 6 months. All those cards can be cancelled.

How much stock of food grains in the country?

The Modi government has said that the Government of India has sufficient stock of food grains in the central pool to meet the requirements of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and other welfare schemes and for additional allocation in the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. About 159 lakh metric tonnes of wheat and 104 LMT of rice will be available on January 1, 2023.
