As per the new sugarcane molasses policy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered sugar mills to reserve at least 20% of the total molasses production. According to a spokesperson of the state government, due to high demand for molasses, special restrictions have been imposed on exports to other states and countries.

According to Krishi Jagran, 158 sugar mills of the state are currently engaged in the crushing of sugarcane. Of these, 104 have been found in the hands of the private sector. 28 mills are being operated by UP Co-operative Sugar Mills Federation, UP State Sugar Corporation and Central Government. At the same time, the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) runs from November 1 to October 31 of the following year. During this time sugar mills produce a variety of alcoholic beverages, including rectified spirits.

Supplies 25% alcohol

Molasses alcohol is used in distilleries (to make beverages), oil depots, pharmacies, chemical plants, laboratories in educational institutions, security institutions, and other establishments. Different types of liquor are produced and consumed by many units. In such a situation, the state government balances supply and demand. Now in the new policy, special attention has been paid to eastern UP by the state government. According to the spokesperson, distilleries in the divisions of Gorakhpur, Devipatan, Azamgarh, Varanasi, Basti and Vindhyachal supply about 25% of the country’s liquor.

Uttar Pradesh dominates the sugar production charts for many years

The Uttar Pradesh government is trying to integrate the sugarcane crop with the lucrative ethanol value chain to provide fair prices to farmers and protect the sector from the cyclical nature of the sugar market. The share of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra in the annual sugarcane production of the country is about 60%. At the same time, Uttar Pradesh has dominated the sugar production charts for many years. Whereas, Maharashtra has overtaken it in recent years due to increase in diversion of sugarcane for ethanol production in UP.
