Farmers cultivating bananas should pay attention, ‘the throat is suffocating the stem’, then the loss is certain

Banana cultivation is considered a profitable deal for the farmers. Due to being a cash crop, the interest of farmers has increased towards banana cultivation. But, to reach the benefits in banana cultivation, farmers have to take many precautions, the main one being Bananas To protect the plants from disease. One such disease is called throat choking. In fact, if the bunch of banana fruit does not come out in the normal way, sometimes tearing the virtual stem is seen coming out in an unusual way, then it is called Throat Choking. This is a physiological disorder of banana. Senior fruit scientist Dr SK Singh is giving necessary tips to the farmers cultivating banana through TV9 Bharatvarsh to prevent this disease.

fruit bunch disease

Throat choking disease is seen in banana plants when the bunch of fruit is coming out from the top of the stem (pseudostem). However, the fruit gets stuck at different stages of emergence and the bunch is seen tearing off the edge of the virtual stem of the plant instead of coming out from the top of the virtual stem (pseudostem). Due to the release of bunches in this way, banana growing farmers suffer huge losses. In less severe cases the top 1 or 2 hands get stuck in the throat of the plant. Due to which the fruits get spoiled and are often discarded in the wholesale market. Since the bunch is not able to come out of the throat, it is difficult to cover the bunch and is more vulnerable to sunburn damage.

disease is more common in north india

This disorder is a bigger problem in the northern part of India than in the southern part of India. This disorder takes a terrible form when banana is planted in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the month of September or after that. This disorder seems to be more in dwarf species of banana than in tall species. This problem is more visible when bunches come out during the time of extreme cold.

What is the reason

Throat choking is seasonal in nature. It is usually highest in winter and early spring, following the cold season. The sub-tropical region of India is most affected by the problem of choke in banana. However, it can also occur after waterlogging or severe water shortage.

Farmers can protect against this disease like this

  • Select tall varieties of banana, which are less sensitive to choke, e.g., Alpan, Champa, Chinese Champa, Malbhog, Kothia, Battisa etc.,
  • Transplant the banana at the right time, manage the transplanting in such a way that the flowers in the banana do not come out during the time of extreme cold.
  • Use better manure and fertilizers for banana cultivation.
  • To reduce the effect of waterlogging, arrange proper drainage in the banana field.
  • Provide regular irrigation to avoid water shortage especially in hot-dry weather.
More use of nitrogenous fertilizers is considered beneficial.
